REVIEW: Reckless Girls

This was the perfect vacation read. I love fast paced, atmospheric books when I’m sitting by the beach or pool and this one fit the bill. Set between Maui and a remote tropical atoll, I was perfectly immersed in the isolated paradise vibes while I sat here on Kona reading. Lux is a typical millennial, not much drive for anything but love and adventure she follows her new boyfriend, Nico, on his boat to sail the seas. After some months of scrimping along in Maui with a boat not fit for sailing, her dreams are fading. One night Nico comes home after being propositioned by two girls, but not in the way you would think, they’ll pay to fix his boat if he will sail them to Meroe Island, an isolated atoll with a spooky history.

Nico and Lux take the offer and end up quickly immersed in life on this unique strip of land. There they meet some other young, like-minded adventurers and life looks better than ever. The more time they spend together, the more their lives begin to rub and the group begins to splinter. When one of them turns up dead, they begin to wonder just what they’ve been drawn into.

What I liked about this book was the undulating anxiety. Quite quickly you begin to wonder just who is telling the truth, do we have an unreliable narrator, a scam or are these just a group of catty, bumbling idiots? The twist was interesting but not wholly unexpected which made the story more believable and yet not as exciting. I’m gonna land at ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 for the pacing and storytelling, I was really quite invested in finding out what the heck was going on. I was just hoping for a slightly different ending.
