REVIEW: The Spite House

A spite house is a house that is built literally to piss off the neighbors. This particular spite house has been reported to be haunted and the owner is looking for someone to stay there to document what is happening. Eric and his daughters are looking for a quick way to make money as they escape their past. He decides to take the unusual caretaker job both for the money and out of interest. Quickly Eric learns that there is more to the story than he was told and he and his family need to find their way out of harm’s way.

This one reminded me a lot of When the Reckoning Comes, it mixes traditional paranormal horror with historic Black reality which makes for an interesting blend. The history of the house and its owner are slowly revealed to us as we flip POVs from Eric and his daughters to the owners and other caretakers. There is one heck of a twist in the last third of the book that had me pretty intrigued. I could see how the ending wouldn’t work for everyone but I enjoyed it. The story balanced the real world and all of our worst nightmares in the most creepy way.

I did this one on audio and the narrator was perfect!

How much money would it take for you to spend the night in a haunted house?
