Ciaran is the son of a goddess, he is to bear a child in her name and sacrifice the woman who bears the child, as is the tradition of priests of his time. When he meets a young woman who is a Christian, he will do anything to be with her (and keep her from sacrifice), he converts to Christianity and both are ultimately punished. Ciaran is entombed until his body is excavated a century later by archaeologist, Caitlin. His body is transported to a museum in NYC until, miraculously he wakes up and goes out into the new modern world. From there we learn the details of his original life, his amusing observations of the modern world and of course, falling in love with the beautiful archaeologist.
This concept of this one reminded me a lot of A Coin for the Ferryman, The Fifth Daughter of Thorn Ranch and of course Outlander. It reads a lot like a Nora Roberts novel, which meant the romance was a little too fluffy for me. But the historical aspects and the fish out of water in modern times were really entertaining. I loved that Ciaran’s crossing of paths with St Padriag himself. There are two more books in the series that are already out, I’ll be interested to see what lies ahead for Ciaran.
The narrator has a nice Irish lilt that puts you right in the right mindset.
